What Is a Family Bushcraft Day?

Bushcraft is about much more than simply learning how to survive outdoors. It is about becoming more observant, resourceful and confident in nature.

During the day, families will work together to tackle practical woodland activities, learn new skills and discover more about the natural environment around them.

No previous bushcraft or outdoor experience is necessary. Activities are introduced in a friendly and accessible way, allowing adults and children to learn alongside one another.

Expect muddy hands, smoky clothes and plenty of woodland adventure!

What Will We Learn?

🌿 Shelter Building

Could your family build a shelter using the resources around you?

Learn some of the basic principles of creating an emergency woodland shelter before working together to construct your own.

You'll need to think about location, protection from the elements, natural materials and how to create a structure strong enough to provide shelter.

It is a fantastic exercise in teamwork, communication and creative problem-solving.

🔥 Fire Lighting Skills

Fire has been at the heart of human survival for thousands of years.

Discover the principles behind successful fire lighting, from choosing suitable tinder and preparing materials to understanding how oxygen, fuel and heat work together.

You'll have the opportunity to practise different fire-lighting skills. However, due to the recent camp fire restrictions, Wildeye is unable to share camp fire activities. However, if the ban is lifted by September, you can have the opportunity to learn how to safely build, manage a campfire and apply leave no trace.

Only if it's possible to have a camp fire going, we can include toasting marshmallows! Bring some chocolate digestive biscuits along, if you would like to make smores. - We will stay updated with government restrictions.

💧 Build a Survival Water Filter

Finding water is one thing. Making dirty water cleaner is another.

Families will learn about water filtration and create their own improvised survival filters using natural and simple materials.

We'll explore how different layers can remove sediment and debris and discuss the important difference between filtering water and making water safe to drink.

It's a practical survival challenge that also helps children understand just how valuable clean water really is.

Bushcraft Knife Work

Learn how to chop kindling using a bushcraft knife.

🍄 Discover Useful Trees, Plants & Fungi

The woodland is full of resources – if you know what you're looking at.

During the experience, we'll explore some of the trees, plants and fungi growing around us and discover the important roles they play within a woodland ecosystem.

Depending on what we find on the day, we'll look at identification, traditional uses, wildlife relationships and some of the ways people have relied upon woodland resources throughout history.

Bushcraft begins with learning to notice what's around you.

🧭 Family Survival Challenge - Orienteering

Your family work together to find the clues hidden around the woods, involves exploring and locating hidden signs to solve a challenge.

Families will need to communicate, make decisions, solve problems and use the resources available to them.

The emphasis is on teamwork, resourcefulness, learning and having fun outdoors together.

Why Try Bushcraft as a Family?

Modern family life can be busy, and opportunities to spend several uninterrupted hours outdoors together are increasingly rare.

A bushcraft day gives families the chance to tune back to nature, get their hands dirty and experience something different together.

Children can develop confidence, independence, curiosity and practical problem-solving skills, while parents and carers have the opportunity to learn alongside them rather than simply watching from the sidelines.

You might be surprised by which member of the family turns out to be the best fire lighter, shelter builder or survival problem solver!

Most importantly, the day is about creating shared experiences and memories in nature.

Our Croydon Woodland

The course takes place within a beautiful private woodland in Croydon, South London, providing an immersive natural setting while remaining accessible from London and the surrounding areas. Toilets are available on site, as well as drinking water taps.

The woodland gives us plenty of space for exploration and family challenges.

Full meeting instructions and information about what to bring will be provided to participants before the course.

Who Is the Course For?

This experience is ideal for families looking for:

  • An outdoor family activity in London

  • An introduction to bushcraft and survival skills

  • A screen-free day in nature

  • Practical outdoor learning for children

  • A different weekend family experience

  • An opportunity to learn new skills together

You don't need specialist outdoor equipment or previous bushcraft experience. Just come prepared to spend the day outdoors, get involved and embrace a little woodland mud!

What Happens if the Weather Is Bad?

Bushcraft is an outdoor activity, and normal autumn weather – including light rain – is part of the experience.

However, safety always comes first.

If extreme weather conditions such as strong winds, thunderstorms or exceptionally heavy rainfall make the woodland unsafe, Wildeye Adventures may need to postpone or reschedule the course.

Where a course needs to be rescheduled due to unsafe weather conditions, alternative arrangements will be communicated to booked participants.

Gift vouchers may also be available, allowing your woodland adventure to be enjoyed on another suitable date.
