I’ve always believed in the power of wild places to transform us and the magic of the Sahara created such a transformation. From the moment I arrived in Marrakech and slipped into a quiet Riad tucked behind the Medina’s hustle, I could feel something unique was coming. We left bustling streets behind and journeyed south, through mountain passes and shifting landscapes, toward the endless dunes that mark the Gateway of the Sahara.

It was around the first desert firelight that the magic truly began. Welcomed by Berber nomads whose families have walked these sands for generations, we shared mint tea and stories under a sky so deep with stars that it felt like a living another reality, one with a deep relationship towards the natural world. Listening to them speak of the land, its rhythms, its silence and listening to 'the voices of the desert' was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.
Daytime in the Sahara is epic, golden dunes unfolding to the horizon, camel reflections casting long shadows across vast spaces and the sun turning everything golden during The Golden Hour. It casts a glow so rich it’s almost unreal, a perfect time for personal reflections, meditations or just taking in the ever changing beauty.
We walked around 25 to 30km, 3 to 4hours through the early morning sun, a day following ancient routes once trodden by traders, gypsies and wanderers alike. The nomad’s footprints led the way, each step a meditation in presence.

Learning from the nomads about their way of life, a life of desert survival. How to make fire, find water, read the land, reshaped my understanding of resilience. But it was the evenings, gathered around firelight with these extraordinary men, that stayed with me. Beneath that vast, silent dome of stars, we shared songs, laughter and reflective silences, moments that seemed to stretch both time and spirit.
There were rituals of renewal, refreshing at a desert well, a grounding sand bath and even watching traditional sand bread bake slow and perfect in the embers. We climbed the highest dune at the Doorway of the Sahara and took in breath taking sunset views. We rested beside a tranquil oasis for lunch beneath swaying palms and visited a historic kasbah where the warm hospitality of locals reminded us how connected life in the desert truly is. A cleansing traditional hammam brought reflection and calm to the journey before a final feast in the desert and celebratory night around the fire and beneath the stars.

Experience the desert through the eyes of Berber Nomads.
Returning to Marrakech after this week-long odyssey felt like emerging from a dream. The contrast between the Sahara’s profound silence and the city’s vibrant pulse only underscored how deeply the desert had affected me. The softness of human connection, the strength found in simplicity and the raw beauty of nature’s rhythms, these are gifts I carry with me still.
